Being a gem, there are a few things about Phos that should be taken note of in terms of their bizarre anatomy. They look very much like a human— but are comprised entirely of crystal, with the special exception of their arms that are made up of a mix of gold and platinum alloys. For your convenience, listed below is information regarding both their species in general as well as their own specific peculiarities.

  • MIXED ANATOMY: Phos was once made up entirely of their namesake material. As of now, all that's left of that original phosphophyllite is their torso— their legs being made up of agate, arms of a malleable mixed alloy, head of lapis lazuli and their left eye of pearl. Their body is covered in powder, though, so anyone looking at them would only be able to take immediate notice of the lapis hair (+ right eye), pearl eye and gold arms!
  • IMMORTALITY: Because they are inorganic creatures, gems are immortal. They cannot be killed, require essentially no food or oxygen, and live thousands of years without experiencing aging or other physical changes. The only catch is that the inclusions within their body require light to function, either from sunlight or another source of illumination; because of this, they hibernate in the winter when there is very little light. The only way to essentially "kill" a gem is to break it down and not reassemble it, which brings us to our next point.
  • SHATTERING: As all types of rocks or crystals, gems can be shattered or broken under the right kind of force. The difficulty in doing this is based on their rating on the Mohs hardness scale and type of cleavage. Breaking a gem will not kill them, and they will be perfectly fine so long as they are reassembled with all of their pieces; if a gem lose a part of their body permanently, it can be replaced with other materials so long as the basic properties are similar to their own. On the other hand, should a gem lose pieces permanently, there is a chance they will lose a few memories along with it. The bigger piece of their body, the bigger the chunk of memory lost. Similarly, the white " skin" seen on the outer layer of their bodies is a powder set over their crystal bodies in order to avoid damage from weathering elements.
  • INCLUSIONS: These are essentially what bring the gems to life. They are tiny organisms that joined with the gem's bodies when they were still forming at the bottom of the ocean, and are stored within the gem's body to retain information and memories. Not all inclusions are alike, however— the inclusions within Phos' original body have a knack for taking to any kind of replacement material attached, and the inclusions within their head allow them to see highly detailed visual information. Just think of it as seeing the very fine details of something, i.e. all the pores on the top of your hand.
  • MISCELLANEOUS: Gems have no concept of gender among themselves nor do they understand the cycle of life and death very well due to being so removed from it. Phos is very curious about these rather animal concepts though, so feel free to talk to them about it!
